KCTV to broadcast Plaza Lighting Ceremony.

BOTTOM LINE: KCTV5 is heralding the fact the station has landed the traditional Plaza Lighting Ceremony for the next three years.
KMBC had broadcasted the event the past several years and wanted to continue, but was outbid by the Kansas City CBS affiliate. The challenge now for KCTV is generate sufficient advertising revenue to justify the cost.
The Thanksgiving evening event has been around since 1930 and has grown a bit tired over the years. While the backers throw out attendance numbers as high as a million, every year Hearne Christopher Jr. of the Kansas City Star writes a column saying the real attendance is about 10% of that.   08-27-2008

KCTV5/KSMO AWARDED PLAZA LIGHTING CEREMONY
KCTV5 / MyKSMO-TV and Highwoods Properties have announced a three -year partnership for KCTV5 and KSMO-TV to exclusively televise the “KCP&L Plaza Lighting Ceremony” starting in 2008, according to an announcement by the CBS affiliate.

Live news coverage from the Plaza will begin at 4 pm leading up to the hour-long special from 6-7 pm. To enhance the on-site experience, a giant big screen will be added to provide people a clear view of the actual broadcast, while they enjoy the festive atmosphere at the Plaza.

Other exciting and new additions will be the “KCP&L Plaza Lighting Behind the Scenes special,” which will air in the week leading up to the ceremony. This unique special will take viewers behind the scenes of the incredible and lengthy process involved in preparing for this spectacular lighting display.
“Midwest Living” a magazine published by KCTV5/MyKSMO-TV-owner Meredith Corporation, will highlight the Plaza Lighting Ceremony with an article in its November/December issue.
