11-29-2008 KMBC DOMINATES NOV. SWEEPS The all-important Nielsen sweeps period for television stations this year ran from October 30th to November 26th. The ratings help establish advertising rates at the stations. Nationally, CBS won the ratings battle for the eighth straight year (LINK). However, locally KMBC-TV, the Kansas City ABC affiliate, continued its domination in the market. The preliminary numbers are out and KMBC-TV9 dominated nearly every important ratings period (M-F Avg.) after 19 of 20 days. A day's ratings is likely not to change the final numbers. In the all-important 10 p.m. news segment that is used by stations to establish advertising rates, KMBC crushed all comers with a 11.5 rating and 19 share. KCTV5, the CBS affiliate, finished second at 9.8/16 with NBC affiliate KSHB-TV41 edging WDAF-TV FOX4 by a razor thin 5.4/9 to 5.2/9. (KSHB says it finished third by a full share point.) The margin at the 6 p.m. news period was even greater for KMBC, which notched a 9.4/17 to KCTV's 6.1/11 with KSHB at 5.9/11 and Fox 4 at 4.9/9. (Note: KSHB reports it finished second at 6.02/9.2 with KCTV third at 5.97/10.9.) At 5 a.m. KMBC finished at 4.1/19 followed by Fox 4 at 3.4/17; KCTV at 2.3/13 and KSHB at 0.8/4. At 6 a.m. KMBC increased its rating lead to 6.5/22 with Fox 4 at 5.6/19; KCTV5 at 3.7/13 and KSHB at 1.9/6.
