12-05-2008 KOPPELMAN ARRANGES FOR HEARING AIDS FOR BOY IN NEED Tess Koppelman, investigative reporter at WDAF-TV Fox 4, did a superb "Problem Solvers" report that helped make a young man's life a lot richer after arranging for new digital hearing aids to replace those destroyed in a fire. Koppelman originally reported (12/1) on a fire that destroyed the young man's hearing aids. The fire occurred the same day his home had been burglarized and his stereo equipment had been stolen. After Koppelman asked viewers for help in a follow-up piece (12/4), Dr. Jim Wise of Associated Audiologists (LINK) in Overland Park responded and fitted the boy, Ricky, with two new digital hearing aids donated by hearing aid manufacturer Widex (link). The young man can now hear better than ever before thanks to the latest state-of-the-art technology the new aids provide. Koppelman ended the follow-up piece by surprising the boy with some stereo equipment to replace what was lost in the fire. "Stories like this remind me why Kansas City is such an amazing community, filled with caring and compassionate people," says Koppelman. "It was such a powerful moment to watch Ricky really hear Janetta (his mother) for the first time. "I'll never forget this story and witnessing so many acts of kindness that really changed lives forever."
