FEEDBACK (11-22-2008): WHY BOTHER TO DRIVE? "Why bother even driving? Have you noticed a big part of their live shots are by the trees outside the studio? One day, they didn't cutaway to the studio fast enough, and you could see Matt Stewart hand off the mic to Surae Chin. Same trees in the next live shot, but at a different angle. "I still watch though."
IT'S NOT LIANA'S FAULT "Don't be too hard on Liana Joyce on the live shot thing. She knows it's bullshit but there's a 20-something line producer who's pulling her strings after being told by some consultant that "people like live." "It's the fault of the 20-something producer - not Liana. Such is life... Take care."
11-22-2008 KCTV5 'LIVE' SHOT ISN'T SO 'LIVE' They all do it. TV reporters stand outside to do a "live" shot even when it makes no sense. Ever notice how many reporters stand in the cold at night in front of a closed city hall building and "report" that "earlier today here at City Hall there was a lively meeting to discuss crime in the city?" It makes no journalistic sense, but studies show that viewers respond to the "live" reports. To them it seems like breaking news. It helps viewers "connect" with the story. Some residents in Overland Park were fascinated to see a large KCTV 5 remote truck with its towering antenna (11/19) setting up during rush hour near West 127th St. Veteran KCTV5 reporter Liana Joyce, who has been covering media happenings in Kansas City for more than 35 years, was on the scene. As Joyce began doing a report in front of some evergreen trees nearby residents "assumed" she was breaking a story about something that happened in their neighborhood. Burglary? Shooting? Rape? Escaped convict? Murder? Well, not exactly. In reality, Joyce had done a story (voice-over package) earlier in the day about a devastating fire in an apartment complex in Eudora, Kansas---about 25 miles away. Standing in Overland Park she was simply giving viewers the impression she was still in Eudora reporting on the story. "Reporting live, Liana Joyce, KCTV5 News," she said signing off.
