02-06-2010 CYNTHIA SMITH TAKES NEW POST WITH WAYSIDE WAIFS Cynthia Smith, who teamed with WDAF-Fox 4's Phil Witt for years as a news co-anchor (and recently during the station's 60th Anniversary in October), will be leaving her post as President and CEO of Sunflower House, a child abuse center in Shawnee, after nearly five years to take over as President at Wayside Waifs. She will start her new position on March 8. Wayside Waifs, Kansas City's largest pet adoption center, was founded in 1944. "This was an agonizing decision for me but many of you know that dogs have always been a part of my life," Smith told friends in an email note. "I have a great appreciation for the care, comfort and companionship animals can provide both children and adults. " I will miss Sunflower House, its incredible staff, volunteers and extraordinary board of directors, but leave knowing I have made life-long friends."
02-10-2010 OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT Wayside Waifs is pleased to announce that Cynthia Smith will be joining our organization in the role of President. Smith will begin her new position March 8, 2010. She will take over for Patti Glass, who is retiring after six years. Smith brings a wealth of experience, leadership and passion to Wayside.
Smith has a long list of accomplishments which showcases her commitment of service to the Kansas City community. For the past five years, she has served as President & CEO of Sunflower House, a child abuse prevention center. A lifelong animal lover, Smith started a pet therapy program at Sunflower House to provide care and comfort to the children served by the agency, which specializes in services to children who have been sexually abused. Her golden retriever, Wishbone, certified through Pets for Life, served in that role for two years.
Many of you will remember Smith from her days as a reporter and weeknight co-anchor at WDAF-TV. She also founded the Fox 4 Love Fund for Children, a nonprofit agency that continues to help thousands of Kansas City children with clothing, medical services, counseling and educational opportunities their parents and caregivers cannot afford. After leaving WDAF-TV, Smith served as Vice President at KCPT Public Television.
