06-06-2010 STAR'S DILLON JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR; KCUR TOP STATION Veteran investigative reporter Karen Dillon, who joined the Kansas City Star 19 years ago, was named the "Journalist of the Year" (6/5) by the Kansas City Press Club at its annual "Heart of America" awards event. The Press Club is part of the Society of Professional Journalists. Kansas City's KCUR (89.3) public radio station was honored as "Radio Station of the Year." Dillon, who has won several awards in the past, including the George Polk award, the Goldsmith Prize for government reporting from Harvard University, the SPJ award, and several state and local awards, joined the Star in November 1991, coming from the Sarasota Herald-Tribune where she covered the crime beat for two years. She is a graduate at the University of Missouri-Columbia and holds a graduate degree in journalism and political science. The Star won numerous awards (LINK), but only announces its own winners.
