Update: State of the Line is reporting that Ink editor Laurie Mansfield's shot at The Pitch has mysteriously disappeared off the Kansas City Star Web site. Unfortunately for her, her views have not disappeared off several other sites that reported on her story. 11-08-2008
Update (11-08-2008): We received a nice plug in the State of the Line site regarding the Ink-Pitch feud. We also would like to thank the great writers over there for forcing us to look up the word "Internecine." ("of or pertaining to conflict or struggle within a group.") Ink Editor Calls Out Pitch in Bemusing Internecine KC Journalism Feud
INK editor Laurie Mansfield
BOTTOM LINE: There is something both funny/sad about Laurie Mansfield, 33, the editor of INK, actually criticizing other publications for their journalistic practices. Real journalists at The Star cringe when INK is even mentioned as a sister publication. INK, the Star's answer to The Pitch, KC's alternative weekly, is the publication that once answered important dating questions (LINK) for girls such as: Can I cum on your face? Will you stick your finger in my butt? Will you pee on me?

I was looking at pics of the Nov. 5 newspaper covers that featured the historic news that a black man was elected president. Then I came across this cover (see above) from Russellville, Arkansas that placed the news of who won sheriff ahead of who won president. What!?!?! In newspapering, we have a phrase "above the fold." Basically, you put your best news/photos above the line that folds the newspaper in half so customers see it when it's placed in the newspaper box or in racks. Russellville placed the presidential news below the fold, and sheriff above. It's pretty embarrassing for our profession. And speaking of embarrassments to our profession, The Pitch has a story on its Web site titled, "A Pitch reporter volunteers for the McCain campaign." Seriously? Please. Don't call yourself a reporter. Our industry's credibility is suffering enough... See hundreds of Nov. 5/Obama newspaper covers here.
