03-10-2010 NOT ALL SUPERB WRITING IS DONE AT THE KANSAS CITY STAR
The Kansas City Star still has a stable of excellent writers despite several rounds of layoffs. But, by no means are all the top writers in the area clustered at the newspaper. Two recent examples of journalistic expertise include major articles by Dan Lybarger and David Conrads, who have written wonderful articles for major publications. Lybarger recently penned an article (LINK) for Cineaste Magazine, which is considered America's leading magazine on the arts and politics of cinema. He has written articles in the past for The Kansas City Star, Script Magazine, eFilmCritic.com and KCActive.com Lybarger did an in-depth interview with Oren Moverman, who directed the movie "The Messenger," which stars Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster as soldiers whose job is to inform relatives that their loved ones will not be returning home. Conrads, a prolific writer for a number of publications including USA Today, The World & I, Kansas City Magazine, and infoZine, wrote an article (3/8) for the Christian Science Monitor highlighting Kansas Citian Marcia Merrick and her inspiring efforts to deliver food to the homeless in the area. She operates the nonprofit Reaching Out Inc. “Marcia serves,” writes Conrads, quoting Gary Blakeman, a retiree and volunteer who has worked with Merrick for seven years. “She doesn’t just dole out food. She actually serves the homeless. And she does what she does with love. She’s truly concerned with their welfare.”
