12-31-2008 KANSAN WILL CEASE PRINT PUBLICATION AFTER 87 YEARS The Kansas City Kansan newspaper will cease publishing a printed newspaper on January 10, 2009---just a few weeks short of its 88th anniversary---which was to be celebrated January 31, 1921. The Web site www.kansascitykansan.com will continue to be operated as a Wyandotte County news source by GateHouse Media, the national publishing company that owns the newspaper. The newspaper said subscribers will be receiving letters shortly regarding refunds. "I'm so sorry to see that!! I thought it would limp along for a long time. Or I hoped it would," says former Kansan editor Rebecca Shelton. "So much KCK tradition (in a good way) and so many good reporters have come and gone through those doors. "The Kansan was an icon in KCK, and it had a great reputation for good journalism and a close relationship with its subscribers," added Shelton. "I cherish my time there, I learned so much from the community, which embraced me, even though I was not from KCK. "I wrote some of my best stories there, and it wasn't because of my great talent, but because it's just such a great place to be." Founded on Jan. 31, 1921, by U.S. Sen. Arthur Capper, the Kansan was the only daily newspaper in Wyandotte County until mid-2008, when its publication schedule was cut back to twice-weekly.
