01-19-2010 CUTS AT KANSAS CITY STAR UNDER WAY Sources have told Bottom Line Communications that seven newsroom employees (out of 12) were let go today at the Kansas City Star as part of the McClatchy-owned newspaper's ongoing cutbacks (LINK) that were first predicted here last week., Reportedly no employees within the newspaper's Sports Department have been cut, which has been a major bone of contention with employees on the news side. At this time the first person identified as being cut today was Julie Rehm, the paper's letters editor, who has been there since 1995. DeAnn Smith, former reporter at the Star and current employee at KSHB-TV41 tweeted "Star sadly laid off joco reporter and a few behind the scene folks including 1 in editorial. Sad and blue." The JOCO reporter is believed to be Jennifer Bhargava, a young reporter in the newspaper's Johnson County Bureau. "She was probably one of the few if any zone reporters left in that bureau, which means she probably had to cover a lot of the municipalities and school boards, of which there are many," noted a source. Other names reported were Web producer Trevan McGee and calendar coordinator Brian Potter. Reportedly the newspaper also fired the head foreman in the Pressroom who had been with the paper about 35 years. (Send additional names/tips to [email protected])
