08-30-2010/09-07-2010 LAYOFFS ON HORIZON AGAIN AT KC STAR? With the drama of sports columnist Jason Whitlock now behind them (the newspaper reportedly received fewer than a dozen calls about his departure), the latest drama at the Kansas City Star involves rumors of more layoffs on the horizon, according to multiple sources at the newspaper. The cuts could begin as early as Tuesday or Wednesday this week. Either way they are on the horizon. "The fun has gone out of the newsroom," relayed a source at the Star. "It is a very sad environment." Despite word that ad revenues are actually increasing at parent company McClatchy Co., the skeleton staff that still remains after several rounds of layoffs the past few years is once again bracing for more pink slips as management talks about reducing expenses. Sources have said a few weeks ago there were rumors of furloughs for employees, but now talk is of layoffs. (Names of editorial employees let go can be sent in confidence to [email protected])
LIGHTS "In regards to the KC Star latest layoff story: Will the last one out of the newsroom at the Star, please turn off the lights."
08-30-2010 INCREASE COST, CUT SIZE "When you increase your subscription price almost $40 from last year and cut the size of the paper you will lose more subscribers (including this one)."
