TV PIONEER BOB WORMINGTON PASSES AWAY
We have been informed that Bob Wormington, a pioneering Kansas City TV broadcaster who was the former general manager at WDAF and VP/GM at KSHB-TV, passed away Saturday (3/6) following a recent stroke.
Wormington, whose career started in 1950, was KSHB-TV's first and only general manager for 23 years (1970-1993) and built and put the station on the air in Kansas City.
He was considered a pioneer in the development of satellite transmission as KSHB was the second TV station in the nation to have its own earth station. KSHB was also the first user of satellite programs for point-to-point transmissions.
He served as the past Chairman, Treasurer and founding board member of the Independent Television Stations (INTV). He was also a past board member of the Electronic Media Rating Council (EMRC).
Active in the community, Wormington served on the board at Avila College, the local and national board of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and also on the national board for Catholic Charities.
He was a Professional Advisory Member of the University of Kansas School of Journalism and Mass Communications and received the school's "Outstanding Alumni" award in 1988.
KSHB's new General Manager Mike Vrabac (
LINK) once worked under Wormington's tutelage at the station.
Holder of a Bachelor's degree from Washburn University, Wormington received his MS degree in Journalism at the University of Kansas.
Our prayers go out to his wonderful family.
