08-30-2010 SHORTS ON TV? NOT A GOOD LOOK It is too bad that Kansas City Royals slugger Billy Butler and college football expert Dennis Dodd didn't call on Bottom Line Communications for media training. If they had we would have gently explained to them that wearing shorts on TV is just not a good look. In May, Butler came on Jack Harry's KSHB "Sports Sunday" show (LINK) to discuss baseball and plug a charity wearing shorts and sandals. Butler looked as if he had come directly from a barbecue to do the show. And then last night (8/29) with KSHB's Lance Veeser subbing for Harry college football expert Dennis Dodd came on wearing shorts. Not a good look. The problem with dressing inappropriately on TV is that it distracts from giving your message. Viewers spend more time watching the interviewee and less time listening to the message. Unless you are being interviewed at a picnic or have a set in front of you hiding your legs (the stories of anchors with sportcoats and ties while wearing shorts are true) wear a normal pair of pants on interviews. Viewers will appreciate it.
