06-27-2008 PITCH BLOG TAKES DIFFERENT VIEW OF SPORTS If you are interested in comparing two different types of sports blogs, look no further than the one developed this week by veteran Kansas City Star sports columnist Jeffrey Flanagan (Star's Flanagan Blogger) with the new one created at the alternative weekly Pitch newspaper. While Flanagan says he wants to do reporting on his blog that complements his newspaper column (with some fun items tossed in), the Pitch's Chris Rasmussen promises to almost totally irreverent in his coverage. "...At this point, some of you might say, This isnt funny. To you, I apologize," wrote Rasmussen in his introductory column. "Also, go fuck yourself, gutless and anonymous reader. If you want wit, stop being so cheap and plunk down 50 cents to read Hearne Christopher Jr., this age's Oscar Wilde." Rasmussen's column is titled "Small Market Scribblings." He began blogging years ago on political and sports blogs. Earlier this year he blogged at "Bugs & Cranks" and then became a daily contributor on the "Plog" (the Pitch's blog). He is a freelancer with the Pitch. Rasmussen says he would like to do pieces similar to those on the sports Web site "Deadspin." "The blogosphere should be... immediate, clever writing from someone who doesn't necessarily follow athletes around but has an opinion," he says. "I guess what I'm trying to say is that there's a role for those with access (traditional MSM media) and those who don't have it who can express their opinion in an unvarnished fashion without worrying about damaging their access by doing so."
