TONE: WE ARE ALL DUMBER AFTER WHITLOCK'S 'EXPLANATION'
Joe Tone assumed the reins as editor at the Pitch Weekly in late June after long-time editor CJ Janovy who stunned locals by jumping from the alternative weekly to a PR job.
However, in just a few months,  the 31-year-old Tone has established himself as a gifted writer who brings a fresh perspective to Kansas City issues that only an "outsider" can bring.
In particular, his recent column on the departure of Kansas City Star sports columnist Jason Whitlock should serve as the definitive (and final) piece on the entire over-hyped departure of Whitlock.
Tone slaps those bloggers who actually think that Whitlock's attacks on his former editor mean anything. Or that readers actually care about his partying. (In reality, who wouldn't attack the guy who fired you?)
Tone systematically tears apart Whitlock's "scorched-newsroom campaign" that involved a three-hour performance on KC's lowest-rated sports talk station. In fact, more people are talking about how Whitlock bitch-slapped his high school interviewer than most of what he actually said. (Does anyone actually think Bob Fescoe would have been intimidated by Whitlock?)
In journalistic circles Tone is considered a "heavy hitter."  His Whitlock column proved that.

HIT OUT OF PARK
"Thanks for posting that. What a great blog. Tone hit it out of the park. In almost 30 years of working in journalism and a lot of it as a manager I never decided to do a series or a story because it might win us an award.
"My philosophy has always been find the best story possible and tell it in the most compelling way you can. Most of the time you hit a single or double and occasionally strike out… but once in a while you hit it out of the park and once in a while you’re lucky enough to be recognized for that work."  ---Rink
