CAN YOU COMPARE PIRATE$ AND ROYAL$?
Kansas City Business Journal reporter Steve Vockrodt has pointed out in an on-line story (8/26) that financial information that has been leaked regarding Major League Baseball's Pittsburgh Pirates might very well be applicable when also looking at the Kansas City's Royals.
He notes that both the Pirates and Royals are considered "small market" teams that have had limited on-field success for several years. Both teams are also held up as examples for the need for revenue sharing.

But maybe the Royals ownership is not in dire financial straits.
"That (the leaking of financial statements) has led various sportswriters to conclude that small-market teams, particularly losing small-market teams like the Pirates, have owners who are pocketing big windfalls, regardless of whether they’re putting a winning team on the field," said Vockrodt.
