01-26-2010 KC STAR CARTOONIST'S RELIGIOUS SHOT MISSES MARK Sometimes it seems as if Kansas City Star editorial cartoonist Lee Judge tries so hard to make fun of anything to do with Christianity that his ire simply misses the mark. (See "Bigot at KC Star.) Star Readers' Representative Derek Donovan has found himself again trying to explain Judge's most recent religious pot-shot directed at a company that was putting coded Bible references on its military rifle sights. The problem was that most readers had no idea what Judge was referring to other than simply slamming Christians. If he really wanted to cause a stir maybe he should try and make fun of Muslims...
Readers miss Lee Judge's humor.
01-26-2010 SCARECROW? "Mr. Judge did not miss his mark, he missed his calling in life. He should have been the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz." ---- Max Burk
01-27-2010 JUDGE DEAD-ON "I think you need to consider the fact many people find the artwork dead-on: there are a large number of people in America (including those who have served in the military as well as those who have not; I fall into the first category) who find the continued illegal “wars” waged in Iraq and Afghanistan have a large Christianity vs. Islamism component to them. "Indeed, should you be trusted enough to receive blunt communication from some of the services’ leaders and average fighting men, you would find the proportion of soldiers who truly believe both actions to be in the name of their religion to be scarily high. "This is not my opinion, but a fact based on numerous established newspaper and magazine articles published over the last several years. And while you may find nothing amiss with the fact, many of us are past alarmed at the fundamental change. Including, it would seem, Lee Judge." ---Nick Charles
WHERE ARE FACTS? "I find it interesting that Nick Charles uses the term “fact” when referring to the number of people that agree with Lee Judge, but not once using an actual fact. He uses phrases like “many people” and “proportion…scarily high” and “large number” to persuade us of his opinion. "But these are not facts. If he used an actual number like “6 million people” or “28% of soldiers,” then he would be using facts. To use subjective and relative terms like “high” and “many” leads me to believe he doesn’t have actual numbers. "I can say that I jump “high” because that’s my opinion. Am I telling the truth? What if I told you I can jump 4 inches? ----pepe
01-29-2010 UNEDUCATED MISSED JUDGE'S POINT "You contend that most readers had no idea what Lee Judge was referring to with his editorial cartoon. I instantly understood where he was coming from and found him right on point. Biblical references have no place being imprinted on the weapons carried by our soldiers for numerous reasons, not the least of which is our men and women in the military represent people of many faiths. I believe it's the ill informed and uneducated who had no clue what he was referring to. "Just as a columnist is charged with opening his or her reader's eye's to what is going on around them and getting them to think, so to is the role of a political cartoonist. If the reader doesn't have a clue what he's referring to, I suggest that they take a few minutes and break away from playing the newest version of God of War or Final Fantasy or catching this week's American Idol and actually try and educate themselves to what's going on in this country and around the world. "It doesn't matter which side of the issue you stand on if you are uneducated about the subject. You're equally the fool." --Duke Frye
CARTOON OFF-BASE "Yet another example of the thousand reasons I loathe the Star and Judge. The Cartoon was wayyyyy off base. It casts our brave soldiers in a bad light as well as mocking Christian faith and the expression of that faith by some. This is why the Star deserves to cease existence." ----- Gary Foster,Mission Ks
