Cleveland station's sweeps piece.
10-28-2009
TV SWEEPS PERIOD IS UPON US
There is nothing as unique in all of the media as the TV Sweeps period.
This is the time when stations will do virtually anything to increase ratings. It is the period of time that establishes the advertising rates for a given station so more viewers means more revenue.
The November TV Sweeps period starts Thursday (10/29) and (mercifully) ends November 25. There will be investigations upon investigations, KCTV5 will have its "scary voice" promotions and each station will attempt to outdo the other for viewers.
No matter how crazy the sweeps stories are in Kansas City, it is likely none will compare to possibly the greatest sweeps piece of all time that was done in 2004 in Cleveland.  That was when a TV news journalist appeared nude on a broadcast to do a first-person report about an artist's photographs.
Anchor Sharon Reed (photo at right)
was one of hundreds of people who participated in Spencer Tunicks nude photo installation in downtown Cleveland in June. Her report on WOIO-TV showed far away angles of her nude and some closer seminude shots, as well as other participants.
The piece was done in June and actually held until the November sweeps and drew a record number of viewers. It simply does not get any better than that...

CRASS STUNT
"John, you gotta be kidding me? I'm assuming here there was sarcasm in your writing, but that stunt was crass. Over the top and tintillating, yes, but still crass. What I hate most about sweeps is that all the teasers and half-stories at 4, 5, and 6, push you to watch the full story at 10. For one, I'm in bed long before that and always miss the "good stuff." heh, heh...."                  ---- Mike T.
