FANNIN'S GROUP RECEIVES 'DART' FROM CJR Mike Fannin, newly named editor/VP at the Kansas City Star, is receiving heat from the Columbia Journalism Review (May/June 2008) for a possible conflict of interest with a group he heads. The magazine is considered the bible of journalism. Fannin currently serves as president of the Associated Press Sports Editors and the group received a "Dart" from the prestigious publication for allowing Jim Jenks, past APSE president, to serve as a judge on one of the group's contest committees in February. In 2007, Jenks left his position as sports editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer to take a position with MLB.com. The APSE's ethics guidelines warn against sports journalists working for official team or league publications "lest it create a conflict of interest or even the appearance of one" noted the magazine. CJR said Fannin acknowledged the concerns, but defended Jenks's inclusion. "Everybody there knows Jim and knows Jim's integrity," said Fannin.
