FANNIN INTERVIEWING FOR EDITOR'S JOB AT KC STAR
03-15-2008
The Kansas City Star's sportswriters have won some of the most prestigious awards in sports journalism the past few years (see below) and now we have learned that Mike Fannin, managing editor/sports and features at the Star will be interviewing for the editor's job at the newspaper to fill the vacancy left by Mark Zieman's recent promotion to president and publisher.
Fannin currently serves as the president of the Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) organization and joined the Star as deputy sports editor in 1997.  He was named assistant manager/editor in 1999.

Prior to joining the Star he was assistant sports editor at the Dallas Morning News from 1993-97 and Sunday sports editor at the now-defunct San Antonio Light from 1989-93.

Four newspapers win coveted Triple Crown at APSE contest

Associated Press (2/27/08)
ORLANDO, Fla. Four newspapers won the coveted Triple Crown in the Associated Press Sports Editors' writing and section contests that ended Wednesday.
The Kansas City Star was the only newspaper in the over-250,00 circulation division to win Top 10 recognition for its daily, Sunday and special sections. Last year, five newspapers in that division swept; this year only the Star did it, earning its third Triple Crown in five years.
There were two winners in the 100,000-250,000 division, with the Palm Beach Post and Des Moines Register each making the Top 10 in the three categories. For the Post, it was its eighth consecutive Triple Crown, the longest streak of any APSE member.
The Lincoln (Neb.) Journal-Star won the Triple Crown in the 40,000 to 100,000 circulation division. There were no three-time section winners in the under-40,000 division.
The 10 finalists in the writing categories also were chosen. Winners will receive their awards in June at the APSE convention in Minneapolis.
