MICHEAL MAHONEY CELEBRATES 29TH ANNIVERSARY

By John Landsberg, BLC
Congratulations to veteran KMBC-TV9 reporter Micheal Mahoney, who will celebrate his 29th anniversary next week (2/18) with Kansas City's ABC affiliate.
While 29 years at any TV station in any market is a remarkable accomplishment, at KMBC he is actually third in seniority of on-air talent. Long-time anchors Len Dawson (43 years) and Larry Moore (41) both have him beat by a fairly wide margin.
In fact, Mahoney has been at the station only two more years than reporter Peggy Breit and four more than Maria Antonia. Turnover has never been a major issue at Kansas City's ratings leader.
Mahoney, 56,  joined KMBC in 1980 from WOI-TV, the ABC affiliate in Des Moines, where he was bureau chief.  He has also worked at WWAY-TV in Wilmington, N.C. and KOMU in Columbia, MO during his media career.
He actually started his TV career at age 14 working at a local cable television station in Ft. Madison, IA, where he grew up.
A University of Missouri journalism graduate, Mahoney has received numerous accolades during his career, including for Kansas City's 1993 flood (Emmy); the Hyatt Regency Skywalk disaster (Mall Dodson National Headliners Award); and a variety of Kansas City Press Club and Missouri Broadcast awards.
On July 17, 1981, Mahoney was the only reporter present at the moment of the Hyatt disaster where more than 100 people died. He appeared with "Nightline's" Ted Koppel that evening and did numerous pieces afterwords for months on the calamity.
Born in Dublin, Ireland (that's why his name is spelled "Micheal"), Mahoney has been active in KC's St. Patrick's Day Parade and co-hosted the United Cerebral Palsy Telethon for more than 10 years.
He and wife, Linda, have a daughter, Keri, a graduate of Benedictine College, who was married this past summer.
