01-11-2010 MARK McGWIRE'S PR STRATEGY OUTLINED The New York Times has done an enlightening story regarding Mark McGwire and his sudden admission of steroid use (LINK) after being mum on the subject for five years. Some of the key points involved McGwire using Ari Fleischer, former White House Press Secretary, as his crisis communications expert. A special interview with Bob Costas on the MLB Network was arranged (Costas is represented by I.M.G., which owns half of Fleischer’s company.) Costas had noted that the "MLB Network would offer a “credible place” and “unlimited time” for McGwire to speak." "In his repeated confessions Monday, he had no defiance or anger, just sadness and tears," said the NYT.

01-12-2010 MELLINGER COMMENTS ON McGWIRE CONFESSION Kansas City Star sportswriter Sam Mellinger has written an interesting column contrasting Mark McGwire's steroid admission versus David Segui's. While McGwire is now crying about his steroid use (and his earnings of $75 million), Segui, a 15-year journeyman in the Major Leagues, says he would use steroids again. “When it got to the point guys I’m competing against are taking it, I’m not taking that risk (of getting beat out by a user),” Segui says. “I ain’t working at Jiffy Lube when I put all my eggs in one basket.”
