12-03-2009 METHOD FORCED TO PULL 'SEXIST' VIRAL AD How politically correct is society today? So much so that the cleaning products folks at Method felt it was necessary to pull an extremely creative and successful viral "Shiny Suds" ad. Why. Because a single blog felt it somehow promoted rape and degraded women. Of course, the YouTube video (rated 5 stars by viewers) is nearing a million hits. The controversy will likely work to increase viewership even more. Ever get the feeling some people and groups spend way too much time trying to be offended these days?
MORE HUMOROUS/LESS OFFENSIVE i watched the ad and laughed and kinda cringed a little too. i mean i get the point of the criticism but still found it it more humorous than offensive, but i'm not a woman either. so, turn the tables. in today's politically correct world, you're going to offend someone no matter what you do... so create a video where the bubbles are female and it's a man in the shower. in fact, you could have a whole host of funny one-liners off of that (whoops, water too cold?). though i doubt you'd get any men complaining that it was degrading, i guess someone would be offended that the bubbles were female thus propogating the stereotype that "women do the cleaning." like the intro to the first vid didn't already? PS: i kinda considered the bubbles as the antithesis of Scrubbing Bubbles who are presented as friendly, hard-working, polite. these guys were the 'bad boys' of bubbles. sorta like comparing the kids in the Family Circle cartoon, to the kids in South Park. heh... ----Mike T.
FAKE CONTROVERSY? Of course, it could also be that the "one offended blogger" was paid by the company to "be offended," thus igniting an additional fire of fury over the ad, which now will be seen by millions more. Nothing is as it seems in today's Internet world. ---Craig Burnett
COFFEE SPITTING "This was too funny. Spit my coffee out laughing. I also like the idea one poster had for a guy in the shower with female bubbles. I think bowing to one complaint is a dangerous road to go down." ---A woman
