02-09-2010 VIRGINIA PAPER LISTS COLTS AS SUPER BOWL WINNERS There are a lot of red faces at the Virginian-Pilot--Virginia's largest daily metro paper--- today after the newspaper actually reversed the score of the Super Bowl and had the Indianapolis Colts as 31-17 winners in its print edition. "First, let me get this out of the way. We blew it. Big time," said Editor Denis Finley as part of a huge correction in the paper (LINK). "Readers of Monday's Sports front saw the score for the Super Bowl as Colts 31, Saints 17. The mistake was repeated on Page 9. "It doesn't get much worse," Finley added. "The whole country watches the Super Bowl, the whole country knows the score, and we get it wrong? Preposterous. Unbelievable. Embarrassing." How does such a silly mistake happen? It could be because the Norfolk-based paper laid off 200 staffers last year.
02-11-2010 COULD NO HAVE HAPPENED AT KC STAR "It would seem that the editorial and or newsroom has pissed off everyone in the pressroom at this newspaper. I can see them now, putting on those plates while laughing their asses off and saying to each other that this will teach those guys to mess with us. "Then again the Pilot might not even print their own paper and now they are finding out why newspapers like to have their own presses and pressmen. "It's actually a very funny story. "Your last line of defense against this happening at any newspaper are the press operators who put the plates on. There's no way in hell that this edition would of came out of the Star. While the Star does have more than their share of mistakes, flubs this huge are easy to spot. "Besides, the Star has quality control foremen who grab 2 copies as soon as it's determined that the copies are good and they go through them page by page looking for press problems and mistakes from down the street." ----Joe
