Barbara Laker (L) and Wendy Ruderman celebrate capturing a Pulitzer with Executive Editor Michael Days. Laker & Days are both University of Missouri graduates.

FORMER STAR INTERN & MU GRAD WIN PULITZERS
A former Kansas University graduate and intern at the Kansas City Star and a University of Missouri journalism graduate have found the ultimate journalistic success by winning prestigious Pulitzer Prizes for 2010 at major daily newspapers.
KU grad (and 1992 Salina South High grad) Colleen McCain Nelson, 35, along with two colleagues at The Dallas Morning News, (4/12) won a Pulitzer prize for editorials examining the social and economic disparities between Dallas’ north and south sides.
A 1995 reporter intern at the KC Star and 1996 Journalism graduate, McCain Nelson was editor of the University Daily Kansan.
Following graduation she met her future husband (and fellow Jayhawk) Eric Nelson, who is a metro editor at the Morning News.
"We both have friends and family members in Kansas City and Lawrence, so we still feel a huge connection to the area," she told Bottom Line. "We even have KU season basketball tickets and fly back for as many games as we can!"
MU graduate Barbara Laker, 52, of the Philadelphia Daily News shared a Pulitzer in investigative journalism. Her reporting exposed a rogue police narcotics squad.

"I always felt like this is something that happens to other people, and not us," said Laker, who joined the paper in 1993.
Incidentally, Laker's Daily News executive editor, Michael Days, received his Master's degree in 1976 in News-Editorial from the University of Missouri (LINK).
