OVERALL NEWSPAPER CIRCULATION DOWN 8.7%
Growing 'Wall St. Journal' Tops List of 25 Biggest Dailies

By Mark Fitzgerald, Editor & Publisher
On the same day it launched its "Greater New York" edition, The Wall Street Journal Monday topped the list of the nation’s largest-circulation daily newspapers. The Journal was the only daily among the 25 largest to gain circulation in the Audit Bureau of Circulations Fas-Fax report for the six-month period ended March 31.
Newspaper circulation is down 8.7% nationally, according to a report just-issued by the Audit Bureau of Circulations. Among the top 25 newspapers, only one is growing: the Wall Street Journal, which comes in at #1 as the nation's biggest daily. It trounced #2 USA Today, where circulation fell 13.58% to dip under 2 million.
USA Today recorded a decrease of 13.58% as it fell below the two million mark to 1,826,622. The San Jose Mercury News exploded into the top 10 list by incorporating the Oakland Tribune and Contra Costa Times as editions of the Mercury News.
The Kansas City Star saw its Sunday circulation drop by 5.57% from 333,006 to 314,449 during the period.
